One thing that I couldn't really do when I was pregnant was sew. I just didn't have the energy. This was surprising to me because I had always envisioned making my own maternity clothes and making things as I enjoyed my pregnancy. Yeah, right. I did not enjoy making things and I did not enjoy my pregnancy. A few weeks after the birth, I was up in the middle of the night pumping and thought, 'I want to make something.' I knew it had to be something small that wasn't too involved. 'Maybe I could make some Christmas ornaments.' So in the wee hours of the night I looked up quilted ornaments on pinterest and found this idea. Of course I am not on pinterest so I didn't get the pattern, I just made something up from the picture. Here is the result.
I cut 1 1/4" strips at least 6 inches long. Then I randomly (well not really, I didn't want two greens together for example) sewed five strips together. I made a tree pattern from some wax paper and cut them out on the diagonal. Here they are.
After this I cut out a tree of felt and sandwiched it in between my two quilted trees. I sewed around it to put it all together, sheared it with pinking shears, and added a thread hanger on top. Then I promptly put it on my tree. I soon saw the benefit of this project. I could work on it for fifteen minutes and feel satisfied. It didn't take a lot of planning to make them. I could pack all the stuff away each time I stopped working on it and it didn't take up a lot of space. And I got to use up a lot of my Christmas scraps. I made about ten of these ornaments in the month and a half before Christmas and I'm now looking forward to the next project.
P.S. Right after I hung it on the tree I mused aloud to Haven, "why do we put ornaments of Christmas trees on the Christmas tree?" Deeeeep.
