I've been wanting to try doing a mosaic for a while so I put an easy mosaic kit on my birthday list and my husband got it for me. Unfortunately, I was miserably pregnant and not very creative around my birthday. In fact, while I was very grateful for the gift, I thought it might be years before I actually got around to making it. Not so! My mom was visiting and it was the perfect time to get out the mosaic and start playing with the sharp glass pieces. I didn't actually cut myself but my fingers did sting a little so I'm sure a little glass dust got in there. I enjoyed the creative process but I'm not sure that I liked randomly sized pieces. Maybe next time I will try it with more uniformly sized pieces, like squares or circles.
Here are my random pieces. I organized them into colors. That was very relaxing.
I played with the designs for a few days before deciding on this design. I really like circles and spirals.
Here it is all glued down.
Here is my grout. The directions told me to add two tbsp of water and then add water a drop or two at a time until my grout was the consistency of thick toothpaste. So after I had added about a thousand more drops and it still looked like this, I decided that this was what thick toothpaste would actually look like.
Well, it was unfortunately too dry, which I found out because I had to reconstitute some of the grout to the correct consistency. Oh well, it still worked relatively well and now I know for the future. It sure was messy and that grout doesn't come out of fabric or plastic.
Trying to clean it up a little, as per the directions.
The finished product. I'm actually quite happy with my first foray into mosaics. I've learned some things by trial and error and now I have a frame to enjoy. I already put a family photo in it.
I love working with glass! I took stained glass for 3 yrs in high school and have thought about finding a class around here for some me time! I love the piece you made!
