Reading

I just finished reading Alex Flinn's newest novel called Bewitching.  It is about Kendra, a witch, and a few of her stories.  Kendra made an appearance in Flinn's Beastly, a modern re-telling of Beauty and the Beast.  You don't have to read Beastly to enjoy Bewitching.  Alex Flinn has become a re-teller of classic fairy tales in modern settings, re-telling Sleeping Beauty, the Frog Prince, the Elves and the Shoemaker, and others.  I have read most of her books and enjoyed them immensely.  It has been a while since I read her other books so I can't write for them, but Bewitching has no language or extreme violence to speak of.

Flinn writes more than just fairy tale re-tellings too.  Of special note is Fade to Black, about an HIV positive (from birth) student.  This was just interesting since I never think about children who are actually born with HIV and how they interact and are seen by their peers.  There is bullying, violence, and I'm sure there's language and maybe some inappropriate material, but I don't remember.  This was back before Flinn's fairy tale stuff and when I also thought that Alex Flinn was a man (I rarely look at author bios).

  1. I'll give it a try. Who wrote Flecks of Gold? Has she come out with another book? :-}

  2. Alicia Buck wrote Flecks of Gold and as far as I can see she has not written another book. Oh well.
