Framing Class

Today I took a framing class at the Arts and Crafts shop on base.  I wasn't exactly sure what I would be learning, but it turned out to be awesome.  Basically I got certified on all the machines they use for framing so I can come during open shop hours and use the machines for $3/hr.

Today I learned how to cut wooden frames using a frame chopper.  We glued our frames together and then nailed a staple type thing over the miter so that if the glue doesn't hold, the staple will.  I learned how to cut matboard using a wall mounted mat cutter and then how to create the white beveled edges on the mat using a table mat cutter.  Then we cut glass using a wall mounted glass cutter.  We had to use safety goggles for that part.  Then we learned how to mount our picture and how to cover the back with backing and wire it up.  We even got to drill mounts on the back, but we "undrilled" them since we only made half a frame.  It was very cool.  We only used scraps from the shop-that makes the class cheaper.  I hope I get to use some of these new found skills.  It really is easy after you learn how to work the machines.

  1. Your curiosity and creativity know no bounds! I'm particularly interested in the matting part. Well done! :-}
