When I picked up this book I already vaguely knew something about Sarah Edmonds and it was nice to be reminded of her courage in a time when women were largely seen as vapid, weak creatures. As you read you can enjoy themes of loyalty, faithfulness, friendship and fulfilling your duty as you follow Sarah's coming-of-age story during the Civil War.
This blog will include descriptions of all the really cool stuff I think I do. Maybe you'll think some of it is cool too.

A Soldier's Secret
I just finished a great historical fiction novel called A Soldier's Secret: the incredible true story of Sarah Edmonds by Marissa Moss. This work of fiction follows the life of Sarah Emma Edmonds who left her home in Canada and dressed as a man so that she could support herself in the 1850s/1860s. She happened to be a man when the Civil War broke out and she joined right up. She worked as a nurse, postmaster, orderly and spy. The author chiefly uses Edmonds own memoirs to create this narrative. Main characters are based on real individuals and their real names are used. It reads like an autobiography and is nicely written. Some of the battles and nursing scenes are gruesome but I think my faithful blog readers can handle it.
