As a stereotypical Mormon housewife, I have my traditions just like everyone else. In this case, baking and decorating sugar cookies. Now some may argue the deliciousness of my favorite cookie recipe, but I adore it and can't even imagine making a different sugar cookie recipe at Christmas...maybe some other time of the year.
Earlier this year I bought some mini cookie cutters which are so cute. I decided that to cut down on eating so many cookies I would make only half a batch but use the mini cookie cutters so it seemed like a lot of cookies. In this manner I would fool my brain into thinking there were a lot when in reality there were half than the normal amount. Genius, I thought. I did end up making some normal sized cookies as well. Here they all are right from the oven.
We have always decorated using tips and bags. I can't remember doing anything else. Luckily, my husband has some experience with cake decorating due to a fortuitous college job. He likes to decorate my cookies too even if I have to remind him how fun it is every year. I usually use five colors but went with just four this year. I really missed the gold. It would've been great for the stars.
Here they all are finished. Aren't they gorgeous! I think they look absolutely desirable and want to gobble them all up now.
My husband even made a happy gingerbread couple complete with wedding rings on. How cute.
But here is his real masterpiece, designated so by himself: a shooting star, but I think the cookie cutter shape is a Christmas tree. Pretty cool.
But as usual, plans sometimes backfire, and this one to make less cookies and thereby eat less of them did. We decorated the cookies on a Tuesday evening. On Wednesday morning I went to the gym to workout. When I got home, I promptly ate four cookies and almost couldn't stop. Usually I have more self-control but I was out of control at that point. So began the great cookie delivery run. I quickly divided up my cookies to deliver to friends all over Tucson and then I quickly started delivering cookies. It was awesome! They were happy and I was happy. I did get to eat some more the following day but they were pretty much gone by then. Oh, they were so good.
Sounds like fun - wish I had been there to help! :-}
