The Boys in the Boat

Again I have retreated into the world of sports; this time, the 1936 Olympic crew races.  The Boys in the Boat: Nine Americans and Their Quest for Gold at the 1936 Berlin Olympics by Daniel James Brown was a wonderful read.  You can follow the boys from the University of Washington as they assemble a crew and train and race for the Olympics over the span of their college careers.  This book also contains a biographical sketch of one of the boys in particular, Joe Rantz, but also has information about the other eight in the boat.

This is also a history book.  You'll learn more about the Great Depression, the Dust Bowl, the struggle to survive in America in the early 30's as well as some history of Germany and the rise of Hitler to power.  Don't be worried if you don't know anything about crew racing.  As you read you will learn the basics and by the end of the book you will be cheering along for our racing boys.
