When I heard that we would be moving out of the harsh desert climate to a less harsh desert climate, I decided I wanted to try planting some things again. My previous experience was that gardening was too much work for too little results. I was hoping in our new town that the climate would make things a little easier.
So I had these four cinder blocks that I wasn't sure what to do with so I made them into planters. I had heard conflicting things about using cinder blocks to grow food so I decided to just plant flowers. First I started out with clearing and leveling the dirt a little. There were a lot of dead weeds so I went out the day after it rained and tried to yank them out. They were tough and I didn't really succeed but I forged ahead anyway.
After I cleared and somewhat leveled the area, I cut out some layers of tulle to put between the cinder block and the hard packed dirt. I read that this would help keep the soil in the cinder block instead of it leaking out as you watered it. You probably can't see it but here's a picture of it:
I lined them up in a pretty row. Two weeks after all this work I had the energy to go buy the soil and flowers. There they are.
Here are my cinder blocks full of garden soil. I threw it in then I watered it and let it sit for a bit.
Then I planted my flowers. I planted marigolds, dianthus, and violas. The violas are actually cool weather plants but they were so cute that I couldn't resist. Now I'm hoping that these little flowers grow and grow instead of die right away.
Here's a close up of some of them.
