Skinny

I just finished reading Skinny by Donna Cooner.  This book showed an inside look into the life of an overweight teenager that decided to have gastric-bypass surgery.  I know next to nothing about the surgery, but the author is a former gastric-bypass patient so I was assured that the author knew what she was talking about.  The main character, Ever Davies, describes her difficult life of high school and eating and being made fun of and so forth.  She also, unfortunately, has terrible self-esteem and constantly tells herself what a failure she is.  You can follow her journey as she has the surgery and starts the long road to recovery with the help of her ever-faithful friend, Rat.  This book contains themes of loyalty, love, friendship, self-esteem, and is definitely a journey story.  If there was language, I don't remember it.

Now I don't know a lot about gastric-bypass surgery but I do know something about losing a ton of weight.  Last year I weighed 200 pounds.  Now, a year later, I weigh somewhere between 124 an 126.  That is a lot of weight to lose.  In some ways I could relate to this character, especially when she looks at herself and can't believe that she can fit into certain clothes or fit into the booth at restaurants.  I mean I still go into plus size stores because that's what I'm used to even though I wear a size six now.  I see myself and think, 'who are you?'  One thing I am utterly thankful for, after having read this book, is that I had the will power to lose weight on my own and without surgery and to make that decision and stick with it.
