Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail

I picked up Wild at my library because I knew a movie had just come out about the story and that it somehow involved a woman and the wilderness.  Since the movie was rated R and I wasn't going to go see it, I thought the book would be a good alternative.  I like wilderness and journey stories, especially if they are memoirs, so I thought this would be a good read.

In truth, the wilderness and journey part of the story was fabulous.  She was grieving the loss of her mother, the loss of her best friend/husband and wondering about her life and the choices she had made thus far.  Believing a solo trek along the Pacific Crest Trail would help her sort things out, she planned and went on her journey.  She found a lot along the way about herself and others and about how the world works for her, including how to survive day to day in the wilderness when crazy things happened.  This is definitely a story of determination, fortitude and will power.

But it was very hard to get by the hundreds of f-words (and other language) all over the place.  There were also accounts of infidelity, abuse, drug use and abortion.  Therefore, I can't recommend this to any of my Mormon friends unless you are fine with a bunch of language and bad choices.  I mean I read it, but I wouldn't want any of you to get a big surprise if you started reading it at my suggestion.  For me the language was distracting and unnecessary; the bad choices were necessary enough to understand the author's journey.  And the story itself was big enough for me to continue reading through to the end and then write about it here.
