I had a very busy week last week. I didn't get to sew one single thing until Thursday afternoon. I decided to try out my "new" log cabin ruler. "New" because I bought it about three years ago and have never used it! On Thursday I made my first log cabin block. They look like this:
Generally you use a light fabric and a contrasting dark fabric so you can see the difference easily. When I put this together, I didn't like it. I thought the flowers were too busy and the green was too dark. I persevered, though, and made three more blocks for a total of four.
The great thing about log cabin blocks is that they are versatile (the bad thing is that they are tedious). You can make all sorts of different patterns and get totally different effects from them. Here are a few of the layouts I tried.
Since I am most fond of pinwheels, I chose the pinwheel layout to complete my small quilt. Here is the finished product. I actually like it a lot better now that it is made and hanging on my wall. It measures approximately 17 x 17. I used three fat quarters of fabric to make this quilt. Two for the front and one for the backing.
That came out cute! :-}
