Awhile ago (maybe a year?) I decided that I wanted to repaint a small dresser that I had inherited from my parents. It used to be my older brother's dresser when he was a baby. Then it was blue. When my sister was born they painted it pink. That was more than 35 years ago (sorry sis!). It actually looked pretty good for being an older paint job. Here is the "original" pink. You can see it has some marks and scuffs and gouges on it, but that's to be expected after about 8 + moves.
Here's what the top of it looked like. It looked considerably worse than the rest of the dresser. I think some boxes had become glued to it in the storage unit and left behind their mark, along with a yellow paper.
So, while I had this vision a year ago of repainting, I didn't actually do anything about it until Tuesday. Yes, Tuesday. I was in Lowe's for some other items, namely something to keep cockroaches from coming out our shower drain, when I decided to look at the paint. The next thing I knew I had decided on a color and gotten paint mixed and made my purchases. On Wednesday, I painted. I didn't sand too much beforehand but I did sand the top of it and most of the corners and edges. I chipped away at some loose paint as well. I set myself up outside in the glorious winter weather and got to work. It took about 2 hours total.
Here it is after I painted one coat. You may notice that only one of the knobs is on the drawers. Well, I painted that one first and discovered that life would be easier if I took them off and painted them separately. I just waited for that one to dry before taking it off. Look at that bright blue! It totally (almost) matches the blue in our bed quilt.
Here it is finished and back in its spot in our bedroom. You'll notice the color looks off; that is just due to the lighting at the time I took the photo. It really is Cosmic Blue as the paint chip states. Don't mind the sun spot either on the top drawer; that is just a sun spot, not poor painting. I think this little dresser looks great. It certainly doesn't look like it is more than 40 years old. They just don't make things like they used to I guess.
Further proof of the paint's blue-ness. Here is the dried up paint.
That old dresser has done pretty well for it's age. I got it used from an older lady who used to babysit Brett when we managed an apt. bldg. on College Ave., near Berkeley. :-}
ReplyDeleteGood job but I think muted pink is better...
