Strombolis!

Dinner was so good tonight I had to post about it immediately.  I love pizza but since I've been on my diet, I have been limited to homemade only.  Pizza places who say they have a whole wheat crust really mean they have a half and half crust so I avoid them.  So the problem with making homemade pizza is that there is too many leftovers (you may only understand this statement if you are me).  So I thought, 'I can make a calzone the size I want and not have leftovers.'  That was the plan, until I remembered the stromboli I had a few years ago that was so delicious (well, yeah,I remembered it years later).  I looked up recipes for both and finally decided on this delicious-looking recipe.

I made half a batch of whole wheat pizza dough (this is enough dough to make one pizza).  I let it rise for about 2 and a half hours.  I also made my own pizza sauce for this recipe (just because I could).

I made two strombolis tonight: one pepperoni for my husband and one bacon and ham for myself.  He got 2/3 of the dough and I got 1/3.  Here is the inside of his.

Rolling these babies up was the tricky part.  It reminded me of making cinnamon rolls, also an intricate event.  It was messy, but it all worked out, as you can see.  I cut slits in the top and topped them with fresh parmesan and parsley flakes.

Here they are after baking.  You cut the slits in the top to make it easier to slice after it's cooked.

I used a pizza cutter to slice these pieces and it worked great.  These were so delicious that I felt I was eating in a restaurant.  We even had leftover pizza sauce for dipping.  The best part is that they really only take a little more effort than pizza (and my husband really enjoyed them).  I can see many strombolis in our future.

  1. Those look very yummy and I wouldn't have to hear I don't want this and I don't want that because they can make their own! Thanks for the great idea. :)

    1. Okay, made it! It was delicious, except I cooked it a little too long. Can you post your crust and sauce recipe? I liked the crust I used okay, but yours sounds better.

  3. They look yummy! I wonder if I could make a "Paleo" crust that would hold up. You are becoming quite the chef. I hope Haven appreciates your culinary adventures. :-}
