Recently (over the past year or more) I've been purchasing some adorable dangly earrings from different crafty places. However, I had forgotten all about them because they haven't been out. In fact, most of them were still on the cards or in the bags I bought them with. I wanted to rectify this situation so I approached the Internet and googled DIY jewelry holders. I settled on using this tutorial.
I walked over to the Goodwill and chose a suitable looking frame for a good price ($2.00). It appeared to be "brand" new and there was a mirror inside!
I took out all the staples that held the mirror and frame together (except for the corner staples, of course, which are embedded into the corners). I removed the mirror and backing. This was all very easy.
Next I sanded the frame and cut up my used toilet paper roll (tip from the tutorial) so that I could paint it.
I painted it the same color blue that I used for my small dresser and used four coats.
I got some 1/8" wire mesh fencing from ACE Hardware. I was very excited to learn you could buy it by the foot! I spent $2.50 on the mesh. I wouldn't recommend it for another similar project because it was a little hard to work with and I cut it a little too small. I used a hand staple gun to staple it to the inside of the frame. This caused the frame to crack a little, but it wasn't bad enough for me to throw out the whole project. I think maybe the wood was too fragile or the staples were too long. In any case, you can't see the cracks and it's good enough for me.
Then I applied some appropriate fabric to the back of the frame. I used the staple gun for this too. The staples also made the face of the frame crack, but, again, that's okay with me. You can't really see it anyway.
You may not be able to tell what is on the fabric so here's a close up. Now can you see that this is perfect for my bathroom?
Here it is hung on my wall with earrings in place. I used paper clips to hang the necklaces just like the tutorial mentioned. I am happy with this project but I don't think I'll be making any more anytime soon. I do hope to fill my 11 x 14 picture frame jewelry holder with more jewelry though!
