Felt Ohio Star Quilt

This was a jewel of a quilt this year.  Basically, I stole the pattern with my eyes from a local quilt store.  I saw it in there and when I left and got in the car I quickly drew the pattern on the closest piece of paper on hand, an empty See's candy bag.  I know exactly when I got that bag too, May 22, 2013, so I pilfered the pattern not too long after.  My mom actually saw the quilt in April of that year, hanging on the wall in the store and said, 'that is so cute but I would never make it.'  Ha, ha!  I would!  So I did and it took me awhile with all the handwork and everything but it was worth it.

First I made a wax paper templet/pattern for the stars and heart.  I have a stencil that helps me make hearts so that was nice.  Then I had to decide what colors to use.  I wanted it to be bright and exciting but I also needed to have contrasting floss for the handwork.  I used red, pink, and white hearts and you can see the colors I chose for the stars.

Then I had to make a little quilt to attach the stars to.  This is the most boring quilt I have ever made in my entire life.  Each block is three inches square so the entire quilt measures about 12 x 12.  It is small.

I sewed the hearts onto the stars using a buttonhole stitch (see close up below) and then glued the stars in place.  Then I got sewing.  One star took about two hours to complete so that gives you some way to judge how much I like doing the buttonhole stitch and how much I love my mom.

Here is the finished quilt.  You can sort of tell that I have stitched around the edges of each star.

Here is the close up so that you can really see what I've done with this quilt.  I really liked the way this turned out and I might even think about doing another one, but not anytime soon.  Hopefully my mom can enjoy this miniature that was sewn with love.
