Thought of the Sunday 48

Earlier this week I read a talk by President Howard W Hunter, who was President of the Church in 1994.  The talk was given in October 1987 and is entitled The Opening and Closing of Doors.  Basically he talks about the notion that when one door closes, another opens.  Therefore, we don't always know what to expect in life.  I just wanted to share two quotes from the talk that I liked when I read it this week.

"I (President Hunter) share the view expressed by Orson F. Whitney in these words: No pain that we suffer, no trial that we experience is wasted. It ministers to our education, to the development of such qualities as patience, faith, fortitude, and humility. All that we suffer and all that we endure, especially when we endure it patiently, builds up our characters, purifies our hearts, expands our souls, and makes us more tender and charitable, more worthy to be called the children of God … and it is through sorrow and suffering, toil and tribulation, that we gain the education that we come here to acquire and which will make us more like our Father and Mother in heaven."

I really like this quote because it reminds me that the good and bad things that happen in my life have purpose.  My experiences can change and mold me into the person that my Heavenly Father wants me to become.

The second quote:

"At various times in our lives, probably at repeated times in our lives, we do have to acknowledge that God knows what we do not know and sees what we do not see. “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the Lord”

Part of this one is on my refrigerator because it helps me to keep my perspective.  If things happen that I don't understand then I can be reminded of that: He knows more than I do and sometimes that is hard to remember.  But when I do remember it, I find that I am more grateful, loving and charitable: in other words, more Christ-like.
