Here is the "fabric" laid out on the floor as I begin to cut out the skirt pieces. You may notice how much there is...well, this just so happens to be a California King fitted sheet that my sister-in-law gave to me. I absolutely love using sheets to make skirts. The fabric is usually cotton, but flowy. It's thin, but nice and sheets are super cheap at thrift stores and you get a ton of material. I also like to call such creations my "Sound of Music" skirts. While I did not use drapes to make my skirts, it is the same fun principle.
The only problem I had with making this skirt is that the smallest size I had was a size 18. Ugh. I needed a size 14 or so. I ended up just sewing a larger seam allowance for each seam. I also basted the seams together to begin with. Basting allows you to easily take out your stitching in case you make a mistake or if it's too big or small. This wastes a lot of thread but thread is infinitely cheaper than fabric.
Here is the finished skirt. I folded up my shirt to you could see most of the skirt. I will not be wearing red on top. I will, of course, be wearing my new blue blouse.
From the side.
I have enough sheet leftover that I could probably make two more skirts that are exactly the same. California Kings are really big!
That turned out really nice! I like your name for them "sound of music skirt" Good fabric is still good fabric regardless of what it was used for first. And with sheets the are nice and wide. I made some curtains from sheets once. Jerry always said he liked them.
