Red Kayak

The drought has ended my friends!  I have finally read a book that I (1) enjoyed and (2) thought you might enjoy as well.  It has been long months since I have found such a book.  In fact, according to my blog history it has been since October 16, 2013.  That is a long time.  Never fear, I have still been reading, just not books I feel I can recommend.  Hopefully, this will begin my streak of fabulous books.  It is, by far, the best book I've read all year.

I initially saw a book at the library called The Journey Back, but found out that it was a sequel to a book called Red Kayak.  Unfortunately, our library system is a bit backward at times.  They had the sequel but not the first book.  Lame!  Luckily, though our library lacks some things, they do have inter-library loan, which is one of the best programs ever.  So I got Red Kayak from a library that is about 90 minutes away.  Yay!

Red Kayak by Priscilla Cummings is about a fourteen year old boy in Eastern Maryland.  It is about his inner struggle to do the right thing as events unfold regarding a red kayak, his neighbors, his best friends, and an accidental death of a child.  He becomes part of something he never dreamed he would become a part of.  This book contains themes of friendship, loyalty, and integrity (and a healthy dose of guilt) with minimal to no language.
